Gauteng’s education department has officially opened the 2027 online admissions period for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners, with the process now live at the Sam Ntuli Sports Centre in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni.
The portal is live now.
Launch event and early response
Provincial MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile led the “switch‑on” ceremony this morning. He announced that more than 1 000 applications have already been submitted, a figure the department sees as a positive start.
“We did tell people that the system will work and it has not crashed,” Maile said. “We hope it doesn’t [crash], but we have done our best to make sure things run smoothly.” He added that ongoing improvements aim to address common parental concerns, such as delays in confirming school placements.
Parents have been encouraged to submit applications promptly rather than waiting until the deadline. “Receiving applications timeously helps us to plan and determine if we need more schools, more teachers, desks, teacher‑support material and scholar transport solutions,” the MEC explained.

History and performance of the digital admissions system
The online portal was first introduced in 2016 under Premier Panyaza Lesufi, with the goal of reducing long queues and modernising school registration. Since then, the system has facilitated placements for millions of learners, matching them to schools near their homes or parents’ workplaces.
Despite its benefits, the platform has faced technical glitches. Past reports noted difficulties handling multiple simultaneous users and occasional delays in communicating application status. There have also been allegations of manipulation by some school officials, prompting previous MECs to acknowledge the system’s early‑stage problems.
In response, it says it has refined the portal each year, incorporating feedback received via email, social media and direct inquiries. “Some parents have approached us with suggestions; they’ve sent e‑mails and reached out on social media…we’re considering all of those,” Maile said.
Looking ahead, the department plans to roll out a more robust version in the coming years, though no specific timeline was given. The current focus remains on ensuring the 2027 intake proceeds without major interruptions.
From a practical standpoint, the ability to process applications online could ease the logistical burden on schools that historically scramble to accommodate unplaced students at the start of the academic year.

If the system continues to function as intended, administrators may have clearer data on enrollment trends, allowing for better allocation of resources such as teachers and transport. However, the real test will be whether the platform can sustain higher traffic volumes as more families become aware of the digital option.
How parents can engage with the system
Families seeking information or assistance are directed to the department’s helpline at 0800 000 789, a WhatsApp line (060 891 0361) and an email address [email protected]. The portal itself is accessible through the official Gauteng education website, where step‑by‑step instructions are provided.
Officials stress that early application not only aids planning but also reduces the likelihood of learners being placed far from home, a common issue in previous years. “The goal is to place children in schools that are convenient for both parents and guardians,” the department’s statement reads.
While the system is not flawless, the province’s continued investment suggests confidence in its long‑term utility. As the 2027 admission window progresses, observers will watch for any signs of strain that could prompt further upgrades before the next enrollment cycle.
