
The era of artificial general intelligence (AGI) has arrived, according to OpenAI, which today unveiled GPT-6 Astra, its latest frontier model. President and co-founder Greg Brockman declared, “Welcome to the AGI era,” signaling a significant shift in the company’s pursuit of systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.
Beyond Chat: Astra Interacts With Software Like a Human
Astra is designed to interact with software as humans do, eliminating the need for dedicated API integrations for every application. It can fill out online forms, update records, conduct web research, and even manipulate software like KiCad and FreeCAD. This capability, the company believes, marks a substantial shift in enterprise AI architecture.
“We’ve been bottlenecked over this gigantic era by people writing connectors and very painstakingly building these connections into all these tools that people can already use,” Brockman said. With Astra, the company aims to bypass this integration work, allowing agents to zip through spreadsheets, fill out forms, and move across web pages.
The rollout begins Thursday for enterprise customers with access to OpenAI’s gated Daybreak program, expanding over the coming days to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers, as well as through the OpenAI API and cloud platforms including AWS Bedrock and Microsoft Azure. The promotional video OpenAI showed during the briefing opened with a 1980s-era demonstration of a person asking a computer to draw a yellow circle, before cutting to present-day footage of employees using voice commands to transform that same circle into a rocket ship and then a complete 3D game within minutes. The video also demonstrated Astra creating an eBay listing entirely through voice interaction.
The enterprise case for Astra extends beyond web browsing. OpenAI says the model can organize calendars, draft results into documents or email, analyze scientific data in Python notebooks, work within Power BI, create and test websites, and install and troubleshoot software. Brockman traced this capability back to OpenAI’s earliest discussions, when researchers envisioned training an agent around the same basic inputs and outputs available to humans using computers: pixels, keyboards, and mice. “I feel like we’ve really achieved the first agent that feels like it’s actually able to do that in a way that’s just so extremely useful,” he said.

AGI by Any Other Name?
Astra’s capabilities have sparked debate about whether it represents the arrival of AGI. OpenAI attributes Astra’s prowess to a combination of large-scale pretraining and reinforcement learning, enabling it to connect information and execute long tasks. However, the definition of AGI remains a moving target, with different interpretations among researchers and enterprises.
“Everyone has a different definition of AGI,” Brockman acknowledged. “For me personally, I do think we’re there. I think there’s a pretty good argument for it.” Yet, he also recognized the complex and evolving nature of the concept, stating, “I think it’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era.”
OpenAI researcher Mia Glaese offered a perspective on how work may change: “With Astra, users have incredible capabilities at their fingertips and can do things that seemed very far away less than a year ago. With those capabilities, we expect people to delegate much more complex work across applications, with humans directing the work at a much higher level.” That shift from prompting AI to supervising AI may ultimately matter more to businesses than another increase on an academic benchmark.
The release raises intriguing questions about the future of work, governance, and the economic impact of AI. As enterprises consider adopting highly autonomous agents, they must also grapple with the challenges of monitoring and controlling these powerful tools. OpenAI’s latest offering serves as a reminder that the arrival of AGI, whatever its definition, is no longer a distant dream but a present reality.
