CNN sues Perplexity over copyright claims

the outlet has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI Inc., alleging the company has committed massive copyright infringement by using artificial intelligence to rewrite its reporting. According to the report, this undermines the foundation of the network’s economic model, which relies on strong earnings report to thrive.

the network joins a long line of publishers that have sued AI firms for copyright infringement. Perplexity has been sued before, including by The New York Times in 2024.

the company claims Perplexity should not be able to use content from entities that create original content without paying for it. A spokesperson stated, “The public rely on high-quality news journalism reported by human beings to understand their world, which is frequently dangerous and expensive to produce.”

Perplexity’s Chief Communications Officer, Jesse Dwyer, countered by saying, “You can’t copyright facts.” However, the company alleges that Perplexity knew it was not permitted to access its content or use its trademarks, which could lead to confusion among consumers, similar to issues seen with AI boost in other fields.

According to the filing lodged with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, the network initially attempted to strike a content licensing deal with Perplexity. The lawsuit states that the companies had come to an arrangement in 2025 in which Perplexity would compensate the network for the use of its content.

However, the deal fell through, and the network demanded that Perplexity stop using its content and name. The lawsuit alleges that Perplexity did not respond to the warning and continued to use the content, causing confusion and deception among consumers who value high-quality products and services.

Copyright Infringement Allegations

the network claims that Perplexity’s use of its content is intended to reap the benefit of consumers’ trust in it. The lawsuit alleges that Perplexity has profited from using the network’s content without permission.

Perplexity’s actions highlight the ongoing debate about copyright law and the use of artificial intelligence in content creation. As the use of AI technology becomes more widespread, they must navigate the complex issue of copyright infringement.

Previous Lawsuits

The New York Times filed a lawsuit against Perplexity in 2024, and the newspaper also launched similar lawsuits against Microsoft Corp. and Open AI Group PBC. These lawsuits demonstrate the growing concern among publishers about copyright infringement by AI companies, which it is trying to address.
