Cadence Design Systems Inc. has announced a new artificial intelligence agent, AuraStack, which assists with packaging and system design for electronic devices. This move extends the company’s AI agents beyond chips, marking a significant step in the design process.

AuraStack is a super-agent within the company’s Allegro AI studio, providing design assistance for engineers who customize packaging and printed circuit boards. These boards turn silicon into functional devices such as phones, servers, and AI infrastructure.

According to Vivek Mishra, corporate vice president of the System Design and Analysis Group, automation in system design is relatively underdeveloped compared to chip design. The process involves numerous constraints, including power delivery, cooling, and wiring, which must be carefully considered.

Mishra noted that modern electronic products are complex systems that require in-depth analysis and specialized tools. The design of the systems and packaging for chips still relies heavily on manual processes and fragmented workflows.

In a conventional workflow, a board might be laid out before thermal needs are examined, leading to potential issues and redesigns later in the process.

AuraStack aims to address these challenges by providing a more integrated and automated design process.

AuraStack follows the company’s ChipStack release, an AI agent that assists with silicon design. This new agent provides a mental model and super-agent architecture, enabling engineers to understand the entire system and collaborate more effectively.

Mishra explained that AuraStack is designed to augment the capabilities of engineers, rather than replace them. It provides a broader range of analysis and reduces the need for manual consultation with multiple teams.

According to Mishra, AuraStack can significantly reduce the time required for design tasks, with some processes taking minutes instead of days. AI agents play a key role in delivering custom silicon and boards.

Other companies, such as ChipAgents and Flux, are also pursuing similar transitions towards AI-powered design and manufacturing. These developments reflect a growing trend towards automation and AI adoption in the electronics industry.

Cadence Design Systems’ move into AI-powered system design highlights the increasing importance of integrated and automated design processes in the development of complex electronic devices.
